"Can brands be trusted to respect social (network) etiquette? And can a few brands that abuse their power ruin it for the rest of us?"

    Short answer: No. Yes.

Hate to be a cynic but my gut tells me this will be a mess since most users don't use filters and privacy options well. You are 100% right on the launch now fix later history. This will be tweaked as it goes along.

    Nice summary Ian.

To Gerard's point, I wonder if they will make the privacy setting both easier to access and easier to understand,

This is a natural evolution, recognizing people more as publishers and the success and failure that comes with that. No real choice but to launch and fix as people will be atrracted or repelled based on how the whole of the people and brands behave...and rules will evolve based on experience.

Bad actors will be there...and be called out. Putting this more in the hands of the people is a good thing and the best choice they have ...as it recognizes the community as the ultimate power. The community will police itself, ostracize abusers and facebook will be the gaurdians enhancing and protecting the perimeters.

Oddly enough, the new Facebook looks a lot like Twitter's format.
